apt. with (un)familliar materials
Warsaw 2023
This penthouse renovation by NOKE is a sensory playground of material and light. Traditional elements like wood, stone, and metal are reimagined with bold, artistic flair. The apartment becomes a stage where surfaces evoke fabric, glass appears fluid, and every texture tells a story. It’s a home, but also an experiment in how far materials can be pushed – and what new emotions they can reveal.

ABOUT
While often seen in the design of premium apartments, these materials still hold the power to surprise – if approached with true ingenuity. The interior architects at NOKE ventured further. They challenged the potential of stone, metal, glass, wood, and textiles, fearlessly testing their limits. They sought their boundaries… and then shattered them.
"Every material in interior design carries specific associations or evokes certain emotions. Many projects build on these, often successfully, but we wanted to take a different path – to challenge them," explains Karol Pasternak, one of NOKE's founders. "Our goal was to uncover the untapped emotions and sensations hidden within these materials," adds co-founder Piotr Maciaszek.
"When traditional materials are used in unexpected ways, in new roles or contexts, they reveal extraordinary practical and aesthetic qualities," notes Aleksandra Hyz, another key figure in the project. "They transform into hyper-surfaces – planes that transcend three dimensions. They bring fresh aesthetic values and evoke novel sensations," she emphasizes.
This multidimensional space invites an immersive dialogue with the observer. It engages all the senses, offering an experience that unfolds in real time. Yet its complexity also deserves a closer look in photographs.
This penthouse apartment, situated in an early 20th-century building, offers tranquility, a generous floor plan, and sweeping views of its lush surroundings. To create a space that feels both expansive and inviting, light yet rich in character (a blend of intriguing paradoxes!), the architects at NOKE employed a series of remarkable design strategies during its complete renovation. One standout approach involved eliminating unnecessary partitions and finishing the walls not only with plaster but also with a variety of unconventional materials. As a result, each wall now conveys a unique narrative.
